In a past newsletter, I wrote about the time I decided to step out on my own when I, as the project manager, was informed by a teammate that our project was canceled. I was one of the last to be informed. Just a few weeks earlier, the company celebrated a significant project milestone.

But the real reason I left that job goes much deeper. This episode was just the tip of the iceberg. There was a lot more going on underneath. An accumulation of soul-sucking experiences ate away at my soul throughout my career. There are far too many to list here, but here are just a couple:

Shortly after graduating from a technical high school with a specialty in electronics in a program that was excellent and amazingly ahead of its time, I was hired by RCA as an electronics technician at a plant that manufactured high-performance communications equipment for emergency services.

Everyone thought I had it made when such a prestigious blue-chip company hired me. I quit after six months because I was a cog in a wheel. The whole experience and rush to ship product and short change quality deadened my soul—my family and friends were shocked when I quit.

Then there was the time I was asked to manage two high-priority projects for a large financial firm. Each project had to deliver software updates monthly, but the development group was under enormous pressure because the updates were always delivered late. I, fortunately, got the projects to deliver on time.

Still, it was only because I could overcome a mind-bending maze of corporate controls and processes that had to be meticulously handled at every step. The software update took two or three minutes. It took a small team working intensely for a month to get it to the finish line. Insanity. I happily accepted the challenge for a year because I knew it would help ignite what was coming next.

I imagine many of you have had similar experiences. That's why you're here. I often chose to suck it up and keep going because we must pay our bills.

In 2009, I said no more and left the corporate world for good, risking it all with a deep desire to change things.

It's been a 14-year journey that has taken me down many roads that often didn't make sense at the time. Now many of the pieces are coming together.
