A Clearer View

In this modern world, it is too easy to fall into a trance-like state and simply go through the motions of life. We are bombarded with so many distractions and stimuli. It's not always easy to stay present and engaged with the world around us. But what if I told you that most people are merely sleepwalking through life?

When I say sleepwalking, I mean they are not fully present and actively engaged with their surroundings or other people. This may sound like a harsh assessment, but it is one that I have come to believe after years of observation and introspection of others and myself.

I'm reminded of one of my favorite quotes from an interview with Sandra Krot, one of the co-authors of Invisible Power. "When I walk around corporations, what strikes me is how busy people's minds are." That was certainly me when I spent most of my time working in the corporate world.

Our minds and our egos get in the way and distort our perception of reality. The ego is the voice inside our heads that constantly narrates our experiences and judges everything around us. It is a voice that never seems to stop, always commenting, analyzing, and categorizing our experiences.

But this constant chatter can make it difficult to see things clearly and objectively. Our thoughts and reactions are often based on memories from the past, which happen so automatically that we don't even notice it.

We are caught up in an endless loop of thinking powered by our stored emotions, feelings, and experiences.

This is further exacerbated by the societal pressure to focus on external achievements. We are conditioned to believe that success means getting ahead and chasing after the perfect life, partner, career, and so on.

We get lost in our doing, which engages the mind even more in thinking.

We must first open our minds to see things more clearly to break free from the trance-like state.

This can be achieved by increasing our awareness, releasing ourselves from the constant internal dialogue of the ego, and focusing on the present moment. It is also crucial to observe without judgment, to view things as they truly are without the distortions of our preconceptions and ego.

These are all things we have not been taught and conditioned to do. Quite the contrary, we are all educated and encouraged to do and be quite the opposite.

When you begin to see this, you start to understand why so many things in our world are upside down and the enormity of the task of turning it around.
